AL-AHSA: Al-Ahsa Governorate is renowned for the rich diversity of its summer produce. During this season, local markets come alive with an abundant supply of fresh fruits and vegetables, attracting growing demand from across the Eastern Province and neighboring countries, particularly for Al-Ahsa okra.
Locally, this distinctive variety is commonly known as “Al-Khnaisri okra,” referring to its pinky-sized pods, or “Cardamom Okra,” due to its resemblance to a large cardamom seed when freshly harvested. Valued for its small size, exceptional tenderness, and delicate texture, it is widely used in traditional cooking.
Mohammed Al-Moji, professor of Arid Land Agriculture at the College of Agricultural and Food Sciences at King Faisal University, noted that okra is a rich source of fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and mucilage, all of which contribute to its wide-ranging health benefits.
Farmers typically harvest okra around three months after planting. The crop is distinguished by its light green color, naturally sweet flavor, abundant yield, and high nutritional value. Because of its delicate nature, the pods require careful handling at every stage, from harvesting them at the ideal level of maturity and picking them in the cool early morning hours, to preserving their quality during transportation and distribution.
