Attica waste authority, EDSNA, will not renew its contract with TEXAN, the company that has run the region’s recycling hubs since a deal informally extended past its 2023 expiration.
In a July 17 letter, EDSNA told the 66 municipalities it represents that towns must now run the hubs themselves, empty machines and transport recyclables. EDSNA also proposed ending cash incentives for recycling, citing abuse like bottles pulled from blue bins and resold to machines. Some municipalities asked EDSNA to remove the hubs; EDSNA refused, saying EU-funded machines must stay in operation.
A European prosecutor’s investigation is ongoing; Greece has repaid the EU €6 million over procurement irregularities.
