Default settings do not protect kids' on the platform, Commission finds
The European Commission has preliminarily found Chinese video-sharing app TikTok’s default account settings for teens fail EU’s online safety rules.
Announcing initial findings on Friday, the Commission said TikTok’s account settings for teens aged between 13 and 18 years old do not adequately safeguard minors or secure their information and protect their privacy.
The EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) investigation into this aspect of TikTok’s platform began in February 2024. The online government rulebook puts a strong emphasis on minor safety and the Commission has opened a string of online child safety probes under the DSA since last year.
An earlier Commission draft decision on TikTok, in February, identified problems with the platform’s addictive design features, too.
