Maria Karystianou, the leader of Greece’s newly formed political movement “Hope for Democracy,” on Friday rejected claims that the group receives Russian support or backing from wealthy business interests.
Speaking to Skai TV, Karystianou, who rose to prominence as head of an association representing relatives of victims of the 2023 Tempe railway disaster, said the movement relies on its members, who continue to hold regular jobs, and on donations from citizens.
“We are a new movement, we are not professional politicians,” she said, adding that the group lacks the resources and infrastructure of established parties.
“We do not have sponsors who would bring companies alongside us to organize everything for us. It would be very easy for us,” she said.
Karystianou said the movement currently has a single office in central Athens, whose rent she personally covers, and dismissed allegations of Russian influence.
