Asen Simeonov, the stepfather accused in the abduction of 11-year-old Natalia, faces a prison sentence of between 10 and 20 years or life imprisonment if convicted on the most serious charge against him. Prosecutors also say part or all of his property could be confiscated. The information was confirmed by Radoslav Lazarov, spokesperson for the District Prosecutor's Office in Varna, who said Simeonov will stand trial on a total of four charges.
Lazarov explained that investigators are still examining the extent to which the child's free will may have been compromised. Based on the initial evidence and the complaint filed by Natalia's mother, prosecutors are treating the case as a kidnapping. He noted that it is difficult to believe an 11-year-old child would willingly accompany her stepfather to unfamiliar locations under such circumstances.
He added that if the investigation establishes that anyone assisted Simeonov in hiding from authorities, additional charges will be brought. Likewise, if sufficient evidence emerges of other crimes allegedly committed by him, those offenses will also be included in the case. The supervising prosecutor has ordered Simeonov's detention for up to 72 hours while the court considers whether to keep him in custody.
