Executive members of the Phoenix Local Football Association, members of the Gerald Chetty Memorial Tournament were pleasantly surprised at the sponsorship announcement made by and Jerome Chetty
A visionary businessman, community builder, and avid sportsman, the late Gerald Chetty saw football as far more than just a game: to him, it was a vital platform to unite young people, nurture talent, and build character.
Six years after his passing, that enduring legacy continues to transform lives across Phoenix. This year marks the fifth consecutive edition of the Gerald Chetty Memorial Tournament, a grassroots movement that launched with a single over-40 division and has since expanded into a powerhouse community event bringing more than 4,000 players to the field.
To celebrate this milestone fifth year, the Chetty family and sponsor Syndicate Transport delivered a major surprise at Friday’s tournament draw at Gateway Church in Mount Edgecombe, announcing an additional R3,000 sponsorship for every one of the 31 participating clubs. The financial injection comes over and above the R166,000 tournament budget requested by organisers, the Phoenix Local Football Association (LFA).
Addressing coaches and officials present, the late founder's brother, Jerome Chetty, praised the frontline dedication of local sports administrators.
