Speaking on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at the launch and training of human rights defenders in Enugu, the Executive Director of RULAAC, Mr. Okechukwu Nwanguma, stated that the initiative was born out of recommendations from the Southeast Stakeholders Summit on Peace and Security held 17 months ago.
The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC), in partnership with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and civil society organisations, has officially launched the Southeast Human Rights Bureau alongside an Open Source Reporting Platform to monitor, document, and tackle human rights abuses across the region.
Speaking on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at the launch and training of human rights defenders in Enugu, the Executive Director of RULAAC, Mr. Okechukwu Nwanguma, stated that the initiative was born out of recommendations from the Southeast Stakeholders Summit on Peace and Security held 17 months ago.
Nwanguma stressed that while addressing the grave security challenges confronting the Southeast is critical, state responses must never compromise fundamental human rights and constitutional governance.
"Today is far more than the inauguration of a new institution. It is the fulfilment of a collective aspiration born out of dialogue, strengthened by partnership, inspired by courage, and sustained by our common commitment to justice, accountability, peace, and respect for human dignity," Nwanguma said.
