According to a report by Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), the traditional Ellwangen-based battery group Varta is facing insolvency. The company's main creditors are said to have decided to call in loans. This also threatens the breakup of the company. The share was delisted from the stock exchange in 2025.
No more coin power for Apple
In the summer of 2024, a restructuring under the German Act on the Stabilization and Restructuring Framework for Companies took place for the first time, but it was apparently not successful. The final blow for Varta: In May, the company announced that a key anchor customer had terminated contracts. This was Apple, which had ordered button cell batteries (coin power) for its AirPods from Varta for years.
Varta subsequently announced that it would close an entire plant in Nördlingen, where 350 people were employed. This followed job cuts and short-time work. Apple is said to have stated that it intends to source its minibatteries from China in the future. The situation has since worsened. According to media reports, there was already a point last autumn where Varta had achieved a group result that was below the quota agreed with the financiers.
