The All Progressives Congress in Oyo State and the state government on Thursday clashed over the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s request for records of contracts and financial transactions involving the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde.
While the APC accused Makinde of attempting to prevent the anti-graft agency from examining the state’s financial records over the past seven years, the government dismissed the allegation, saying its decision to seek judicial clarification on the EFCC’s request was not an attempt to frustrate any investigation.
The exchange followed a Federal High Court ruling in Ibadan which set aside an EFCC request for copies of contracts and details of transactions with contractors, describing the demand as speculative and a “fishing expedition.”
The APC on Thursday expressed dismay over what it described as Makinde’s alleged efforts to prevent the EFCC from examining records of financial transactions involving his administration over the past seven years, describing the development as appalling and shameful.
The APC, in a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, in Ibadan, further berated Makinde over alleged attempts to prevent the anti-graft agency from carrying out its statutory duty of investigating how funds accrued to the state were spent within a specific period, “even when it is an undeniable fact that accountability matters in public administration.”
