Bitcoin’s share of total crypto market capitalization has climbed back above 68%, a level that historically signals the market is in a distinctly Bitcoin-first mood.
What dominance actually means
Think of the total crypto market like a pie. Bitcoin dominance measures how much of that pie Bitcoin controls. When dominance rises, Bitcoin is either gaining value faster than everything else, or everything else is losing value faster than Bitcoin.
At 68%, Bitcoin controls more than two-thirds of all capital sitting in crypto markets. Dominance dropped to around 40% in mid-2021, the peak of the last altcoin supercycle. Since then, dominance traded broadly between 53% and 64% through 2026, before a more significant breakout above 60% was recorded in April. Pre-2017, Bitcoin’s dominance sat above 90% for most of crypto’s early history.
