Revenue and Housing Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy accused the BRS of spreading misinformation over the State government’s Indiramma Towers housing initiative, alleging that the opposition was unable to accept the dignified housing for the poor in the heart of Hyderabad.Addressing the media here, he said the previous BRS government had failed to fulfil the housing aspirations of the urban poor. The BRS relocated economically weaker sections to the outskirts from their workplaces and essential services with the few double bedroom houses.The Minister said the Congress government had adopted a constituency-wise approach to construct Indiramma houses close to the areas where beneficiaries currently reside, ensuring they have access to employment, education and healthcare.Rejecting the BRS’ criticism of the project, Mr. Srinivasa Reddy questioned why the opposition objected to government land being used for public welfare. “Should the poor not have a place to live in the heart of Hyderabad?” he asked.The Minister also dismissed allegations that the government planned to convert existing double-bedroom housing units into Indiramma Towers for sale, describing the claims as “completely false”.He said the government would provide a subsidy of ₹5 lakh per beneficiary to reduce the financial burden. Beneficiaries would contribute only ₹6 lakh.Mr. Srinivasa Reddy said 50% of the ownership rights in the first phase of the project would be reserved for weaker sections, including 14% for Scheduled Castes, 5% for Scheduled Tribes, 16% for Backward Classes, 5% for persons with disabilities, and 10% for government outsourcing employees, Class IV employees and sanitation workers.
