NEW YORK: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reaffirmed solidarity with Gulf states and stressed the need to halt Iranian attacks threatening regional security during talks with GCC Secretary-General Jasem Al-Budaiwi in New York.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of a UN Security Council high-level open debate, where the two officials reviewed the latest regional developments and their implications on regional and international security, stability and the global economy, according to the GCC Secretariat.
Al-Budaiwi said the recent Iranian attacks on GCC states and the “systematic targeting” of critical infrastructure reflected what he described as Tehran’s efforts to destabilize the region and undermine peace initiatives.
He highlighted the importance of ending the attacks and deterring Iran from continuing policies that threaten international peace and security.
Iran has launched missile and drone attacks targeting US military facilities across several Gulf states, including Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar, while Saudi Arabia has also reported intercepting Iranian projectiles aimed at its territory.
