National Institute of Technology-Tiruchi (NIT-T) has introduced three new postgraduate programmes in the academic year 2026-2027 to address the varied scope of engineering studies in the coming years, its director G. Aghila has said.Addressing a press conference in Tiruchi on Thursday, Ms. Aghila highlighted that the new M.Tech courses in Urban Planning (Department of Architecture), Engineering Design (Mechanical Engineering) and Water Resources Engineering and Management (Civil Engineering), besides the PG diploma in Healthcare Technology, were initiated in keeping with the National Education Policy 2020, as well as to cater to the diversity of subject requirements.“The new courses were started based on market demand and changing nature of the workplace. We have also integrated subject-specific Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based learning in them. Besides this, undergraduate students will be given orientation on AI usage in education to prepare them for the future,” said Ms. Aghila. The institution is also upskilling its faculty for adopting AI-based pedagogy in the classroom. The Tata Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning has been launched with a fund of ₹10 crore from TCS Foundation, Ms. Aghila said.Despite economic challenges, NIT-T recorded a placement rate of over 80% of registered applicants receiving job offers this year. The stress on entrepreneurship among students through the innovation and incubation ecosystem has led to a change in the pattern of job placements. As part of an ongoing campus expansion programme, six new annexe buildings for six departments have been sanctioned, of which three have been inaugurated. “The Board of Governors has approved additional hostel accommodation for 2,000 (1,200 boys and 800 girls) students. The buildings are in the design stage, and foundation will be laid by December,” said Ms. Aghila.Seven new Centres of Excellence — for Sustainability, Digital Infrastructure, Outreach and Digital Education, Global Academic and Research, Indian Knowledge Systems and the Integral Wellness — have been established at NIT-T.
