Tech giant faces large sanction after more than two years of investigation
The European Commission fined US tech giant Google €890 million on Thursday for two breaches of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) – the largest total sanction issued under the EU’s Big Tech rulebook so far.
The penalty – the first to fall on Google under the DMA – breaks down to €460 million for self-preferencing of its search services and €430 million for anti-steering tactics applied on its Android mobile app store.
Briefing journalists on Thursday, two senior Commission officials said that Google’s infringements had taken place between March 2024 until December 2025.
The decision, a long time coming – with the investigation lasting more than two years – confirms preliminary findings issued by the Commission in March 2025.
