POLITICAL leaders emphasise the need for constitutional adherence in immigration enforcement, addressing public concerns about the treatment of undocumented immigrants and urging constructive dialogue among civil society.
Les Govender, the deputy Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces said respect for the rule of law must remain paramount.
"In all circumstances the rule of law must apply, be it on the side of the police or citizens of our country. Citizens who break the law must understand that they will be subjected to law enforcement. Police officers need to be empathetic in carrying out their duties and not be influenced by unruly mobs."
Govender added that members of the public should report suspected illegal immigration to authorities rather than confronting individuals themselves.
