Sir, - Your editorial calling for energy supports to be targeted (“Supports must be targeted” Comment & Letters, July 21st 2026) is timely. The increasing levels of debt and arrears witnessed over the last few years point to the requirement for more targeted and sustainable interventions. There is a need for a framework of measures to ease the cost of electricity in the long term. Consideration should be given to leveraging the existing free electricity allowance framework through the Household Benefits Package as a targeted measure to assist low-income and vulnerable groups. This would help ensure energy supports are directed towards those most in need and linked directly to household energy costs by delivering energy bill credits, rather than cash, to ensure supports directly reduce energy costs and help prevent arrears.Ireland still relies on imported fossil fuels for most of its home heating. That dependency leaves families exposed to price shocks we cannot control. The best lasting way to reduce that exposure is to use less energy in the first place, and that means improving the efficiency of our homes. Not targeting energy supports would leave Ireland colder, poorer, more polluted and more exposed to matters outside our control.
