Explainer: This is what led to Andrew Chauke's clearance from Shamila Batohi's allegations

The South Gauteng Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Andrew Chauke, has been declared fit to hold office after a year in suspension.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially cleared South Gauteng Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Advocate Andrew Chauke after accepting the findings of an independent inquiry that found no credible evidence that he was unfit to hold office.

The decision ends nearly a year of suspension and brings to a close one of the National Prosecuting Authority's (NPA) most significant internal accountability processes since the State Capture era.

The inquiry was established by President Ramaphosa on 29 September 2025 after the former National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Advocate Shamila Batohi raised concerns about Chauke's conduct.

Batohi had asked the President to institute proceedings to determine whether Chauke remained fit and proper to continue serving as South Gauteng DPP.
