The 23-year-old was hit in the groin by a foul ball during his at-bat but still finished the plate appearance, singled to center field, and played one more half inning before leaving the game. He immediately fell to the ground and stayed there for more than a minute while the Athletics’ training staff checked on him.What happened next surprised everyone. Even after taking the painful hit, Kuroda-Grauer stayed in the batter’s box. Three pitches later, he lined a single into center field and then returned to the field to play defense. He was replaced before the bottom of the sixth inning after the discomfort became too much.Later that night, doctors at a Phoenix hospital determined that he had suffered a ruptured testicle and performed emergency surgery.Athletics manager Mark Kotsay visited Kuroda-Grauer in the hospital on Tuesday and shared a positive update.“He was in great spirits, joking around. His personality really came through,” Kotsay told reporters. “I don’t know if there’s another player who’s ever ruptured a testicle, stayed in the game, got a hit and played another half inning.”The Athletics said Kuroda-Grauer is resting comfortably as he continues to recover.Joshua Kuroda-Grauer’s strong start ends with roster changes for the AthleticsBefore the injury, Kuroda-Grauer had been enjoying an impressive start to his major league career. Earlier in Monday’s 5-2 win over Arizona, he hit the first home run of his MLB career and finished the game 2-for-3. It was his eighth multi-hit game in just 16 major league appearances.The rookie has quickly become one of the team’s bright spots, batting .417 with one home run and four RBIs through his first 16 games.With Kuroda-Grauer sidelined, the Athletics recalled infielder Max Muncy and right-handed pitcher Hayden Juenger from Triple-A Las Vegas. The club also placed reliever Mark Leiter Jr. on the 15-day injured list because of a right hip impingement. Leiter has appeared in 36 games this season and holds a 4.28 ERA.For now, the Athletics will move forward without one of their hottest young players, while Kuroda-Grauer focuses on recovering from an injury that ended a memorable night in an unexpected way.
