Inter Miami has signed Brazilian midfielder Casemiro on a free transfer, but MLS has announced the league is investigating the team for potentially violating tampering rules in the process, MLS announced on Wednesday.“Major League Soccer is reviewing a tampering allegation against Inter Miami CF,” the MLS statement read. “The league is gathering all relevant information and will refrain from further comment until the review is complete. While Inter Miami CF and the LA Galaxy have reached a settlement for the Discovery Priority to sign Casemiro, the terms will be released upon conclusion of the tampering investigation.”The LA Galaxy had the league’s priority to negotiate with Casemiro — called “discovery rights” in MLS, which are meant to stop teams from negotiating against each other for in-demand targets. Teams are supposed to acquire discovery rights before contacting a potential signing.The Galaxy will be compensated by Miami for Casemiro’s discovery rights, but that amount will be determined, in part, after the conclusion of the tampering investigation.This is not the first time Miami has been in trouble with the league. In 2021, after an investigation that found the club skirted the salary cap rules, MLS suspended Miami’s chief operating officer and sporting director Paul McDonough for a year while fining the club $2 million, plus another fine of $250,000 for managing owner Jorge Mas. Inter was docked a total of $2,271,250 million in allocation money in 2022 and 2023.Miami falsely reported the salary of Blaise Matuidi, listing the player below the designated player threshold while paying him several million dollars more without reporting that compensation to the league. MLS also found that Andrés Reyes, who was acquired before the start of the 2020 season on a year-long loan from Atlético Nacional, also should have been classified as a DP. The investigation also found that Inter Miami entered into undisclosed agreements that resulted in the underreporting of salary budget numbers for Leandro González Pírez, Nicolas Figal and Julian Carranza.Casemiro, 34, joins Miami on a non-DP deal, at least initially. The deal is a short-term contract through the summer of 2027 with an option to extend through the summer of 2029. MLS salary cap numbers are determined only by guaranteed years in a contract, unless an option is easily achievable by an automatic trigger.“Casemiro’s arrival reflects the vision and ambition that define Inter Miami,” Mas said in a club statement. “We never settle. Casemiro was pivotal to the team securing Champions League football for next season, as the club finished third in the league.Casemiro started for Brazil at the World Cup this summer and has 91 caps for his country.Casemiro joined Manchester United in the summer of 2022 from Real Madrid, where he had an iconic run of winning the Champions League five times (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022) and three league titles.MLS has returned from a near-two-month break for the World Cup and Miami plays its first match on Wednesday night against the Chicago Fire.
