Ukraine has a new top general. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appointed Mykhailo Drapatyi as Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces on July 21, replacing Oleksandr Syrskyi in the role that effectively controls the day-to-day direction of Europe’s largest active conflict.
Russia’s response was about as subtle as you’d expect. Within hours of the announcement, Moscow’s Interior Ministry issued an arrest warrant for Drapatyi, citing charges dating back to 2023.
Who is Mykhailo Drapatyi
Drapatyi is 43 years old, born November 21, 1982. He served as commander of Ukraine’s Ground Forces from 2024 to 2025, then moved to lead the Joint Forces starting June 3, 2025. Before all of that, he earned his reputation on the front lines, including leading actions during the fight for Mariupol back in 2014, when the conflict in eastern Ukraine was still in its early stages.
