For the current fiscal year, which runs until 30 June 2027, the Illinois General Assembly has allocated $14 million to the programme. However, the actual number of rebates issued will depend on the balance of the state’s Electric Vehicle Rebate Fund. What is clear is that the programme will be open from 1 August until 31 December 2026. The incentive scheme supports the purchase of new and used battery-electric vehicles and motorcycles, with rebates available while funding lasts.
The programme continues with several changes introduced during the previous application cycle. Buyers of eligible new or used battery-electric vehicles can receive a rebate of $2,000. Applicants classified as low income qualify for an additional $2,000, bringing the total incentive to $4,000. Eligible electric motorcycles remain entitled to a rebate of $1,500.
The programme is open to vehicles with a purchase price of up to $80,000. Applicants must submit their rebate request within 180 days of purchasing the vehicle, provided the application falls within the official application window. Applications received before 1 August or after 31 December will not be accepted.
Eligibility is restricted to Illinois residents whose household income does not exceed 500 per cent of the federal poverty level. Applicants must also purchase the vehicle from a dealership licensed by the Illinois Secretary of State rather than lease it. Lower-income households remain a key focus of the programme.
