Soccer has spent decades being told it would never crack the American mainstream. The 2026 World Cup final just ended that conversation.
Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina on July 21, settled in extra time, drew an average of 38.9 million viewers on Fox’s English-language broadcast alone. The peak hit 51.7 million. To put that in context, that single number makes it the most-watched soccer telecast in English-language US television history.
Telemundo’s Spanish-language coverage added between 22.6 and 23.9 million viewers on top of that. Combined, the two networks pulled a total audience somewhere between 61.5 and 66.4 million people, positioning the final among the largest non-NFL, non-news audiences the country has seen in decades.
How big is big, exactly
Fox’s average viewership for this final was 38.937 million. The 2022 final, Argentina versus France, drew 16.78 million on the same network. That’s a 132% increase in three years.
