Former Emadlangeni Mayor and her alleged accomplice have been arrested over an alleged R2 Million mall feasibility study fraud
A former mayor of Emadlangeni Municipality, in northern KwaZulu-Natal, and her alleged accomplice have been arrested by the Hawks' Durban Serious Corruption Investigation unit in connection with an alleged fraudulent municipal payment exceeding R2 million.
Lindile Mhlungu, 42, the former mayor of Emadlangeni Municipality in Utrecht, and Musawenkosi Thwala, 52, were arrested on Tuesday on charges of fraud, corruption and contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA).
According to the Hawks, the charges stem from events dating back to July 10, 2019, when Mhlungu allegedly introduced a service provider to conduct a presentation on a feasibility study for the proposed development of a shopping mall in Utrecht.
It is alleged that she instructed the then Municipal Manager to appoint the service provider without following the municipality's prescribed Supply Chain Management procedures.
