Azania Youth In Action leader Linda Vilakazi claims to have information of looting in eThekwini.
As Umkhonto weSizwe Party(MKP) is tipped to take over eThekwini Municipality in the upcoming elections, the ANC-led municipality has been accused of having looted close R3 billion through four proxy companies.
The shocking revelation was made by the Azania Youth In Action leader Linda Vilakazi in a media briefing on Thursday. Vilakazi publicly named the four companies which he claimed had siphoned billions of rands from the city through a dubious tendering process known as SSS.
He alleged the tender system appeared designed specifically for these companies, which had become the biggest beneficiaries of lucrative contracts often accompanied by inflated invoices that the city allegedly paid without question.
“The reason we have decided to come out and inform the public about this corruption is the refusal of the eThekwini management to work with us to expose this corruption which is taking place at Supply Chain Management (SCM). We believe this is deliberate looting. We have information at our disposal that these four companies are being paid with no attachment in their invoices for what they have done. Even if they have done a job for the municipality, the invoices are way above the scope of work they have done which means they are inflating their pricing. We want this to be investigated by outside investigative agencies,” said Vilakazi.
