The study involved 76 adults with chronic low back pain, who were assigned to either an eight-week individualised swimming programme with physiotherapy education or education alone. Participants in the swimming group reported significant improvements in function, reduced pain, and increased confidence in managing their back pain. Their disability levels decreased by over 50 per cent at the end of the programme, an improvement 30 per cent greater than those who only received education. While benefits for the swimming group persisted for 12 months, researchers note the study's small sample size and call for further, larger trials to confirm these findings.
