As the steel frame of Wrexham’s new Kop stand continues to climb higher into the north Wales sky, another building block designed to make the club Premier League-ready in the near future has been put in place.Steve Nickson, the head of recruitment at Newcastle United, will move to The Racecourse Ground as sporting director in a clear sign of the Welsh club’s long-term ambitions. He will officially leave Newcastle on September 2, bringing a wealth of experience to Wrexham, having spent 15 years at St James’ Park and worked as Blackburn Rovers’ head of academy recruitment for a decade.Nickson’s addition in a newly created role underlines Wrexham’s desire to widen their remit in the transfer market on the back of a highest league finish of seventh in the Championship.Seen as a coup considering West Ham United and Birmingham City were believed to be interested in securing Nickson’s services following his decision this summer to leave Tyneside, it will represent a significant shift in how the club owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac operates.Manager Phil Parkinson has led a tight-knit recruitment team featuring assistant Steve Parkin, first-team coach Dave Jones, goalkeeping coach Aidan Davison and chief scout Chris Johnson.Since the start of the Hollywood era, there’s been a transfer committee that in recent years has featured Parkinson, chief executive Michael Williamson, director Shaun Harvey, former FA technical director Les Reed and Humphrey Ker, the man who in effect set the owners on the road to buying Wrexham.Humphrey Ker has been part of Wrexham’s transfer committee (Lyndsay Radnedge/Getty Images)Once he officially joins following one last window working for Newcastle, Nickson will considerably strengthen this setup, particularly when it comes to knowledge of the foreign market, an area Wrexham have only dipped their toe into.Last summer saw New Zealand international Liberato Cacace become the first overseas addition of the Hollywood era. Interest was shown in January in Sidiki Cherif, a teenage striker from Ligue 1 side Angers who joined Turkish side Fenerbahce, while Fiorentina’s Argentine defender Matias Moreno is one of several defenders under consideration right now.
