Kate McShane/Getty ImagesJuly 22, 2026 6:36 am EDT Updated Wrexham have agreed a deal to bring in Newcastle United’s head of recruitment Steve Nickson as the club’s new sporting director.Seen as a key appointment in the push for Premier League promotion, Nickson will start at The Racecourse Ground on September 2 in a newly-created role after this transfer window finishes.Nickson’s arrival will add a wealth of experience to Wrexham’s recruitment operation at senior and youth levels, with the 61-year-old having spent 15 years at Newcastle.According to sources, speaking on condition of anonymity to protect relationships, Nickson is working out his notice period before moving to north Wales after the current window closes.The Athletic reported in June that Nickson was set to leave Newcastle, with a move to the Championship seen as his most likely destination.Initially, newly relegated West Ham United were linked, along with Birmingham City. Wrexham, however, have won the race for the renowned talent spotter’s signature and a contract has been signed.Phil Parkinson, the Wrexham manager, has been kept in the loop regarding talks and gave the green light to the appointment.Wrexham have been approached for comment.Since 2017, Nickson has been head of recruitment and responsible for leading Newcastle’s scouting operation. Previously, he had worked as head of youth recruitment on Tyneside, having filled a similar role at Blackburn Rovers before his arrival in 2011.Sven Botman, Ayoze Perez and Joelinton were among those signed by Newcastle on Nickson’s watch in previous windows, while he drove the purchase of young prospects including Antonio Cordero and Vakhtang Salia.After a pre-season tour of the United States, Wrexham begin their Championship campaign at Cardiff City on August 17.Jul 22, 2026Connections: Sports EditionSpot the pattern.
