Former Justice department minister Dr Penuell Maduna, appeared before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), chaired by retired Justice Sisi Khampepe.
Former Police and Justice minister Dr Penuell Maduna has revealed that tensions between senior law enforcement leaders during the early years of South Africa’s democracy might have contributed to the failures in prioritising TRC-related matters.
Maduna appeared before the Khampepe Commission of Inquiry on Tuesday, where he provided a rare glimpse into the complexities surrounding the handling of Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) cases, highlighting the lack of formal government policy and the tumultuous interactions between influential figures at the helm of the justice system.
Maduna indicated that attempts to get former police commissioner Jackie Selebi to mend relations with former National Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Bulelani Ngcuka, failed.
"Former minister Tshwete took former minister Selebi and Advocate Ngcuka to a fancy hotel in Sandton. It was to find a way to mend the two, but unfortunately they ended up wanting to hit one another," Maduna told Justice Sisi Khampepe, the commission's chairperson.
