Minister of Social Development, Dina Pule, outlined her vision and priorities for strengthening the social development sector in a briefing yesterday.
Social Development Minister Dina Pule has revealed that 350,000 social grants will be reviewed this financial year as the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) continues with its verification process for beneficiaries.
Speaking during a media briefing on Tuesday, said SASSA had identified more than 420,000 grants for review during the 2025/26 financial year through data verification and validation processes. Of those, more than 240,000 reviews were completed, while around 160,000 beneficiaries failed to comply with the review process.
The grant review process has led to grants being suspended for those who are not verified resulting in frustration among beneficiaries.
Pule said the agency plans to review more than 350,000 grants this financial year while saving an estimated R1.5 billion for the state. She added that the measures were necessary to protect the integrity of South Africa's social assistance system and are required under the Social Assistance Act.
