For millions of Nigerian students, the journey from junior to senior secondary school could soon look very different.
The federal government announced plans to scrap the long-standing gulf between Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS).
According to the Federal Ministry of Education, Nigeria’s 9-3-4 education system remains fully in place, while introducing a seamless transition process from JSS3 to SS1 under the implementation of the 12-Year Continuous Basic Education Programme.
Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, emphasised that the existing JSS-SSS disarticulation policy has failed to achieve its objectives and has become one of the factors contributing to Nigeria’s worsening education crisis.
“The transition from JSS3 to SS1 has become a major point at which many students discontinue their education due to admission bottlenecks, placement challenges and additional financial burdens on parents.
