The premiers are meeting in Charlottetown starting today, with national unity on the agenda. There’s some history there: I’m just old enough to remember the failed referendum on the Charlottetown Accord that was supposed to fix national unity in 1992. But I’m also old enough to have learned in school about the “booze-soaked bull session” at the Charlottetown Conference in 1864 that created the Canadian union in the first place. Here’s hoping this week’s vibes are more “conference” than “accord.”
