Naha, Okinawa Pref., July 21 (Jiji Press)--A Chinese research ship was seen extending what appeared to be a pipe into the ocean in Japan's exclusive economic zone off one of the Senkaku Islands in the southernmost prefecture of Okinawa on Tuesday, according to the Japan Coast Guard. The Xiang Yang Hong 22 vessel was spotted by a JCG patrol ship some 70 kilometers west-northwest of Uotsurijima around 12:35 p.m., the coast guard's 11th regional headquarters in Naha, the capital of Okinawa, said. The patrol ship urged it by radio to cease operations, warning that conducting a maritime survey in the EEZ without Japan's consent is not permitted. The Japanese-administered Senkaku Islands are claimed by China. END [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
