Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it. Those are the prophetic words of George Santayana, the Spanish Philosopher. It’s a phrase that has revisited me over the past few days as I have tackled the matter of Resolve Communications with a strong sense of déjà vu.
The déjà vu of which I speak is of that frightening time when South Africans came to learn how easily the Gupta family had insidiously controlled actors of the state, to their financial benefit, at the expense of our country. The comparison between what is emerging about Tony Leon and Resolve communications on the one hand and the Guptas on the other, is more credible than some may realise even if it is early days in the investigation, as I will now show.
The first rule is that state capture starts with party capture. It was political actors in the ANC that were captured by the Guptas to secure the levers of power that party held in the state, and we now see this pattern emerging with Tony Leon and Resolve Communications.
