Wes Streeting, the new British secretary of defence, has vowed “steady” support for Ukraine soon after his appointment to the position on Monday evening.“It is an honour to take on the role of Defence Secretary. The initiative, dubbed “Freyja,” aims to develop a low-cost European air defense system capable of intercepting ballistic missiles within 12 months.Streeting served as the health secretary between 2024 and 2026 before resigning in May over what he called a lack of confidence in former Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s leadership.The appointment also coincided with a Russian warship conducting a live-fire drill off the coastal city of Plymouth earlier on the same day.Years of underfunding take their tollAlongside maintaining support for Ukraine, Streeting is expected to tackle mounting criticism that years of inadequate defense funding have left Britain’s military degraded.The British military had been plagued by decades of budget cuts and underfunding – as of June, the country has no operational submarines, which served as the launching platform for the country’s nuclear weapons, while the HMS Dragon, deployed to the eastern Mediterranean in March after the war in Iran broke out, broke down shortly after arrival.
