Concern has been raised about the pollution flowing into Albert Falls Dam in the KZN Midlands.
uMngeni Municipality mayor Chris Pappas has appealed to the public to sign a petition to 'Save Albert Falls dam'.
This comes as the dam, which is one of the province's key sources of fresh water, is under pressure due to pollution, including sewage pollution and runoff from nearby farming operations.
In a post on his Facebook page, Pappas said: “Albert Falls Dam is one of KwaZulu-Natal's most important water sources, but it is being polluted by repeated sewage spills, failing wastewater infrastructure and other forms of pollution. If we do nothing, the environmental, economic and public health consequences will only get worse. We're calling on the National Department of Water and Sanitation, uMgungundlovu District Municipality, and EDTEA to take urgent action to stop the pollution, hold polluters accountable, and restore the health of the dam.”
His comments come after DA Umgungundlovu caucus leader Councillor Hazel Lake said she has escalated the matter to the provincial government for intervention.
