US President Donald Trump issued a stern warning on Truth Social on Monday, July 20, stating that the Islamic Republic would face an exceptionally heavy response for the death of any American service member.
“Every time Iran kills an American soldier, they will pay for that killing many times over!” Trump wrote. He added that this directive had been issued to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine, and all military commanders.
The President’s remarks came as US Central Command (CENTCOM) updated its casualty figures for American forces in the Middle East conflict, reporting that total US military deaths had reached 17.
CENTCOM announced on July 19 that a US service member had been killed in action on July 18 in northern Iraq during the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian attack drone. According to the statement, another service member was wounded in the same incident and continues to receive treatment for minor injuries.
A day earlier, CENTCOM reported the first American combat casualties in the conflict with Iran since March, stating that two US military personnel had been killed and another had been reported missing during a defence operation in Jordan - an event that further endangered the fragile ceasefire as regional hostilities intensified.
