The EU has fined AliExpress €550 million (£468m) over the sale of illegal, unsafe or counterfeit goods, in the largest penalty to date under the Digital Services Act.
The Alibaba-owned platform didn’t take effective measures to reduce the dissemination of products that violate the DSA, the European Commission found.
Following a two-year investigation, the Commission said it found that AliExpress hadn’t allocated sufficient staff to verify products, and failed to remove unsafe toys and dangerous cosmetics for “multiple weeks” after they were detected.
