The penalty issued under the bloc's Digital Services Act is the highest so far
The European Commission fined Chinese ecommerce giant AliExpress €550 million on Monday for selling unsafe and illegal products in breach of the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA).
The penalty – the largest so far under the bloc’s online governance rulebook – confirms the Commission’s preliminary breach finding from June 2025, after it started the probe back in March 2024.
The EU’s executive found the Chinese giant failed to adequately assess the risks of illegal, unsafe and counterfeit products circulating on the platform. AliExpress did not have sufficient safeguards to mitigate the sale of such products, the Commission also said.
Tech Commissioner Henna Virkkunen told reporters that ecommerce is a big priority for its enforcement of the DSA as certain platforms operating in the region routinely sell products that do not meet the bloc’s environmental or consumer safety standards.
