It has taken over two years, but Chelsea are finally bringing Morgan Rogers to Stamford Bridge.Chelsea have agreed a record fee for a British player of £117million ($157m) with Aston Villa. The club-record deal caused a real stir when The Athletic broke the news on Saturday, a few hours before Rogers started England’s 6-4 win over France in the World Cup third-place play-offThe move for Rogers was agreed in 48 hours, according to sources with understanding of the deal, speaking anonymously — as have others in this article — to protect relationships. They say Chelsea began formal negotiations with Villa and Rogers’ representatives on Thursday, a day after England’s semi-final defeat against Argentina. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso then phoned Rogers on Friday to explain his plans and personal terms were agreed the same day. The deal also involved owners and sporting directors Paul Winstanley, Laurence Stewart, Joe Shields and Sam Jewell. Club captain Reece James spoke with Rogers in the England camp, and close friend Cole Palmer reached out by text. This sent a strong signal to Rogers how seriously Chelsea were looking to secure his signature. The speed with which they worked was regarded by Rogers as another positive and the final stages of negotiations were completed on Saturday. Rogers was the subject of interest from some of the biggest clubs in England and abroad. His return of 14 goals and 11 assists for Villa last season made the 23-year-old a prime target. But with five years left on his contract, Villa were always going to take some convincing to sell such a prized asset. For several weeks, Arsenal seemed to be favourites, but instead, Rogers is heading to their London rivals. This is how Chelsea won the race for Rogers.One of Chelsea’s priorities this summer was to sign a versatile attacker who could start for the team straight away. A wishlist was drawn up, but Rogers was first choice from day one.Chelsea and Alonso like his ability to play on the left, right, as a ‘No 10’, ‘false nine’ and deeper in midfield. His physicality, size and attitude are appreciated too. Rogers is seen as someone who can fit in the dressing room and is regarded as humble without ego. Villa sources, though sad he is departing, praised his humility and capacity to develop into a key leader, crediting his emotional intelligence. It is hoped he can form one of the most exciting attacks in Europe, alongside Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro and Estevao.Alonso, in Friday’s call to Rogers, impressed on him his desire to bring him to the club since he was hired in May and outlined how he would be used. Rogers felt he connected to the Spaniard and was impressed by being pursued so passionately by a figure with such a strong reputation as both a player and manager. As one source told The Athletic: “He came away from their conversation thinking Xabi Alonso is the real deal.”Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso called Rogers (David Klein/Reuters)Chelsea were keen on Rogers before he joined Villa for an initial £8m (plus £7m in add-ons) from Middlesbrough in January 2024, particularly after he scored at Stamford Bridge in a Carabao Cup tie that month. Villa’s director of football operations, Damian Vidagany, was entrenched in negotiations for the player at the time. Middlesbrough inserted a 20 per cent sell-on clause in the deal.Chelsea’s interest in Rogers resurfaced in January 2025 and particularly last summer, but Villa did not want to sell. Manager Unai Emery regarded Rogers as the club’s best player and Villa considered him among the top five in the Premier League. In November, the England international was given a third new contract in less than two years. Last summer, Emery spoke to Rogers, asking if he could give him one more season as Villa felt he was too important to lose. His versatility was key given they could not strengthen attacking positions. Those close to Villa say Rogers was worth 14 goals a season, so sourcing a replacement would be critical. This was factored in when pursuing West Ham United captain Jarrod Bowen, before he signed a new contract. As one Villa player told The Athletic: “(Rogers) is like Unai’s son. This was discussed with Emery heading into the summer. There have been multiple examples of big-money outgoings, including Moussa Diaby, Douglas Luiz, Jacob Ramsey, Jhon Duran and Youri Tielemans. But people close to Villa’s situation felt the most straightforward solution to ensure Villa could continue to re-shape the squad and adhere to financial regulations was the sale of Rogers.He was not agitating for a move, but several sources close to the player and the club felt this summer was the right time for him to depart and for Villa to extract maximum value. Shields has known Rogers since they were together at Manchester City’s academy, where he was head of recruitment and talent management from 2018. Rogers joined City’s academy from West Bromwich Albion in 2019 and they worked together until Shields left for Southampton in 2022. But everyone at Chelsea was on board with the signing.Chelsea enjoy a strong relationship with Villa so felt they were in a good place. The club told the player’s representatives earlier in the summer they would not make any move for Rogers while England still had a chance to win the World Cup. They did not want to cause a distraction.Chelsea did not want to proceed until England’s chances of winning the World Cup were over (Odd Andersen/AFP via Getty Images)Villa did not want to sell before the tournament and felt Rogers’ involvement would only increase his value.While they did not want to lose Rogers, there was an appreciation that to bring in signings and ensure compliance with UEFA financial regulations, key assets would have to be sold. From the outset, Villa insisted he would not go on the cheap. Liverpool’s acquisitions of Alexander Isak (£125m) and Florian Wirtz (£116m) in 2025 were set as an early benchmark.City’s signing of Elliot Anderson for £116m earlier this month solidified things. Villa wanted more than that given Rogers is an attacking player. It is why club-to-club negotiations with Chelsea did not take long because they accepted what it would take. A day before Chelsea reached a verbal agreement for the player, some of Rogers’ team-mates at Villa had heard he wanted a move to West London. Villa had anticipated Rogers’ departure would progress once England were out of the World Cup, so secured his direct replacement, signing Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for a club-record fee of more than £50m. Villa will use the money received for Rogers to sign the priority position of a fast winger, with West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville and Paris Saint-Germain’s Ibrahim Mbaye among the leading targets. Chelsea knew Arsenal were the main competition. Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany was an admirer while PSG had informed his representatives that Rogers was included on a list of attacking midfielders they were tracking.But Premier League champions Arsenal seemed to be in a great position to sign him. England team-mates Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice were part of a charm offensive to convince Rogers to join. Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard also spoke to Rogers. Sources close to Rogers say manager Mikel Arteta also spoke directly with the player. Arsenal came away with the impression they were Rogers’ preferred choice. During those discussions, Rogers received the impression he would be primarily used as a left winger rather than a No 10.This was no deal-breaker, however. Chelsea did not promise Rogers the No 10 role either. They did, however, intimate he would be used in a variety of positions – and that flexibility appealed to Rogers.Aston Villa co-owner and chairman Nassef Sawiris had the final say on whether Rogers would go. An informal encounter with the Arsenal hierarchy in the U.S. provided an opportunity to discuss a potential transfer.Villa and Arsenal were always some distance apart. Arsenal had a clear valuation of Rogers: £80million. They were determined to stick to it, despite Villa’s insistence on attaining a record fee for a British player.That game of brinkmanship was exacerbated by Arsenal’s interest in Villa defender Ezri Konsa — again, with a valuation some way short of Villa’s. Whereas Chelsea had made it clear he was their main choice, Arsenal’s links with Julian Alvarez, Bradley Barcola and Eli Junior Kroupi over several weeks sowed a seed of doubt in the player’s camp despite Arsenal’s insistence he was their No 1 priority. Rogers felt more love from Chelsea when they made their move.For their part, Arsenal maintain that any deal for Rogers was always contingent on the right price point. When Chelsea made their move, Arsenal were contacted to see if they would be willing to match the £117million offer. They declined, choosing to focus on alternative targets.Another factor was where he could make the most impact. Chelsea argued he had the chance to help turn the club, who finished 10th last season and have not won the Premier League since 2017, into winners again. That appealed. Arsenal were obviously still an attractive prospect, but won the title in May so his impact would be different.Chelsea did not see their failure to qualify for the Champions League as a huge obstacle. They are confident about the season ahead and Alonso’s ability to lead a talented squad back into the competition next year. Their history of being serial trophy winners over the last 30 years was a major draw for Rogers too. Personal terms over a six-year contract (plus an option for another 12 months) were formalised rapidly once Rogers made up his mind. He will be paid a base salary that fits into the club’s wage structure with clauses to increase that, including the percentage of games played and whether Chelsea are in the Champions League.It also includes the possibility of earning more depending on factors such as the percentage of matches played and whether the club is competing in the Champions League.Chelsea have already brought in around £140m this summer from the departures of Marc Cucurella (Real Madrid), Andrey Santos (Manchester United), Tyrique George (Everton) and Jimmy-Jay Morgan (West Bromwich Albion), as well as the compensation received for former head coach Enzo Maresca joining Manchester City. That meant Chelsea could afford to go big for Rogers and more sales are planned to take their income above £300m for a second year in a row. They feel the arrival of Rogers has sent a message to targets of their ambition, as well as inside their own dressing room. At least two more key arrivals are planned.Rogers had his medical in London on Monday before going on holiday after a long season for club and country. Then Chelsea’s long-standing desire to see him in blue will be fulfilled at last.
