ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba has written to the National Treasury to urge them to oversee the City of Johannesburg funds.
ActionSA president and Johannesburg mayoral candidate Herman Mashaba has called on National Treasury to place the City of Johannesburg's finances under closer scrutiny, alleging that stronger oversight is needed as the metro battles a worsening cash crisis.
Mashaba has written to Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana, requesting the deployment of a technical support team to monitor how National Treasury funds allocated to the city are managed and spent.
He also asked whether the municipality had submitted a credible recovery plan before the release of the funds and what safeguards Treasury intended to implement to ensure the money is used strictly for its intended purpose.
The intervention comes at a critical time for Johannesburg, with Mashaba warning that the city's financial position has deteriorated to the point where it has only nine days of cash reserves remaining.
