Suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) deputy chief Brigadier Julius Mkhwanazi told the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court that he was in a romantic relationship with Witness K, claiming she was in love with him and hoped they would get married.
Suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) deputy chief Brigadier Julius Mkhwanazi told the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Monday that he was in a romantic relationship with Witness K, claiming she was in love with him and hoped they would get married.
The claims emerged during his bail application in connection with the alleged theft of precious stones worth R14.9 million.
State prosecutor Nceba Ntelwa said the prosecution would not oppose bail, arguing that Mkhwanazi and his co-accused were not flight risks and there was no indication they would evade trial or interfere with witnesses.
The State also said they had cooperated with the investigation.
