POLICE are investigating a break-in at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman Catholic Church in San Fernando, where intruders damaged a window and tampered with the church’s collection area, but left without stealing any money or valuables.The break-in at the church on Harris Promenade—mere footsteps away from the San Fernando Police Station—was discovered shortly before daybreak on Saturday. Investigators said entry was gained by breaking the glass of a window on the northern side of the church. The intruder or intruders then allegedly tampered with the collection area inside the church before leaving through a side entrance door, which was believed to have been opened from the inside of the church.Crime scene investigators of the Southern Police Division processed the scene but were unable to recover any workable fingerprints.In a statement posted on social media, parish priest Fr Matthew said activities on the church premises resumed after the police conducted their investigations.The post read, “On the 18th July at approximately 5.20 a.m., it was discovered that the Our Lady of Perpetual Help compound and church had been broken into. The police arrived in a timely manner after being notified and took statements from those who were present on the compound.”Fr Matthew said the church celebrations scheduled for Saturday morning were temporarily relocated to the Bishop Mendes Auditorium while officers and crime scene investigators examined the premises.Yesterday, the church held its 50th anniversary celebrations of Bishop Clyde Harvey and Monsignor Christian Pereira on the premises.“Once the appropriate clearance was given, all activities were resumed in the church,” Fr Matthew said.Although the intruders caused minor damage to church property, the priest assured parishioners that no valuables were taken.“While there was minor damage to the church windows and property, no monetary or valuable loss was sustained,” he said, thanking parishioners for their continued prayers.A police report stated that Cpl Ali and PC Wyatt of the San Fernando CID visited the scene, made certain observations, interviewed people and received certain information.The police investigators have requested the security camera footage, and crime scene experts processed the crime scene, but no workable prints were found.
