Tempus AI just wrote a $1.5 billion check to acquire Personalis, Inc., a deal that values the cancer testing company at $16.25 per share. The move is designed to bolt Personalis’ tumor-informed testing technology onto Tempus’ AI-driven data platform, creating what the company hopes will be a dominant force in precision oncology.

What Tempus is actually buying

At the core of this acquisition is Personalis’ NeXT Personal test, a blood test that can detect whether cancer has come back after treatment by hunting for tiny traces of tumor DNA still circulating in a patient’s body. The technical name for this is minimal residual disease, or MRD, testing.

The NeXT Personal test already has Medicare coverage across three cancer indications. Tempus CEO Eric Lefkofsky framed the MRD market as a $20 billion opportunity. With roughly 2.1 million new cancer diagnoses occurring annually in the US alone, the addressable patient population is enormous and growing.
