Marketers shouldn’t need more motivation to think digitally, but the FDA is giving them another reason.

After nearly a year of slapping pharmaceutical companies on the wrist with letters over “misleading” advertising, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is planning to move toward a rule that would restrict pharma DTC ads further — this time with more regulatory teeth.
The agency quietly posted a proposed rule this month that, if finalized, would remove the adequate provision guidance. The rule, established in 1997, allows pharma ads to list the most important safety and risk information, as long as consumers are directed to another source containing all of the drug’s extensive safety and risk information.
