Now Emcure’s injectable semaglutide brand Poviztra can be used to treat liver condition

MASH develops when excess fat accumulation in the liver leads to chronic inflammation, fibrosis and progressive liver damage

Pune-based Emcure Pharmaceuticals said its Poviztra (injectable semaglutide) will now be available for the treatment of non-cirrhotic metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) in adults with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis. Emcure has a partnership with Novo Nordisk and sells a second brand of the latter’s obesity drug Wegovy under its own brandname Poviztra.The development comes days after Novo Nordisk said the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) had approved Wegovy to treat the liver condition. The approval makes the innovator molecule the first and only GLP-1 receptor agonist approved in India for the treatment of the disease, Emcure said.Timely InterventionMASH develops when excess fat accumulation in the liver leads to chronic inflammation, fibrosis and progressive liver damage, Emcure explained. Closely linked with obesity, type 2 diabetes and other metabolic disorders, “the disease is often asymptomatic until advanced stages, making timely diagnosis and intervention critical,” it added.Satish Mehta, Emcure Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, said: “The approval for MASH marks an important milestone for patients living with a serious and often underdiagnosed liver disease.” The company would work with healthcare professionals to improve awareness, encourage earlier diagnosis and expand access to evidence-based treatment for people living with MASH, he added.Poviztra contains innovator semaglutide (rDNA-origin) that has established its role in chronic weight management in persons living with obesity and are overweight with co-morbid conditions (example Hypertension, Dyslipedemia, Type 2 Diabetes, etc), Emcure said. Poviztra is also approved and marketed already for obese patients with established cardiovascular disease as well as more recently for management of adolescent obesity with pediatric patients above 12 years and above, the company said.Published on July 20, 2026
