A total of 9,806 MG S5 EVs built between 22 January 2025 and 29 January 2026 are affected by the recall worldwide, including 1,830 vehicles in Germany. The German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) is overseeing the campaign under reference number 16617R.
The recall concerns a potential fault affecting the radiator fan in low ambient temperatures. If the fan freezes and seizes, activating the interior heating system can cause the fan control’s series resistor to overheat. In the worst-case scenario, this could lead to a fire.
According to the KBA, incidents involving property damage and/or personal injury have already been reported in connection with the defect. However, the authority has not disclosed any further details on the number or severity of these incidents.
To address the issue, MG plans to release an update for the IMCU software. The revised software is designed to prevent critical overheating under the described conditions. No timeline for the recall has been provided yet. MG is conducting the recall internally under the code RE005.
The S5 EV has been available in Germany since 2025 and has replaced the ZS EV in MG’s battery-electric vehicle portfolio. The compact electric SUV is based on the Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) of its Chinese parent company, SAIC. The recall now underway affects S5 EV vehicles produced between 22 January 2025 and 29 January 2026.
