President Cyril Ramaphosa has promised R156 billion for water and sanitation infrastructure developments over the next three years
President Cyril Ramaphosa has put struggling municipalities on notice, warning that officials who fail to manage water infrastructure and services properly could face criminal action and even personal liability as government ramps up efforts to confront South Africa’s deepening water crisis.
The warning accompanies a major commitment of R156 billion for water and sanitation infrastructure over the next three years, with government seeking to reverse years of deteriorating infrastructure, persistent supply disruptions and poor service delivery that have left communities and businesses increasingly frustrated.
In his weekly newsletter on Monday, Ramaphosa said access to safe and reliable water remained one of government's most urgent priorities, adding that the country could no longer afford delays in addressing mounting challenges across the sector
“Over the next three years, government has allocated R156 billion to water and sanitation infrastructure as part of its broader public infrastructure investment programme,” Ramaphosa said.
