Blackstone is writing a check for a South Korean company most people have never heard of, and that is precisely the point. The firm announced on July 20 a definitive agreement to invest in Futronic, a manufacturer of high-precision actuators and motion-control systems founded in 1993.

Industry sources put the deal value at around 1 trillion won, roughly $676 million. Financial terms were not officially disclosed.

What Futronic actually does

Actuators are the components that make machines move. Think of them as the muscles inside industrial robots, automotive systems, and factory equipment.

The company has spent three decades cultivating relationships with global automotive original equipment manufacturers and the industrial robotics industry. It operates in both South Korea and the United States, giving it supply-chain reach across two of the world’s most important manufacturing markets.
