The BBC star announced the news shortly after the broadcast began.07:56, 20 Jul 2026BBC viewers saw a slightly different set-up to the morning programme during the latest instalment.‌On Monday (July 20), BBC Breakfast viewers watched Jon Kay open the show solo as he fronted a special edition live from one of the most famous streets in Britain.‌The BBC star commented: "Welcome to Breakfast with me, Jon Kay, on Downing Street on the day that Labour's Andy Burnham becomes the UK's seventh Prime Minister in 10 years."‌As the star presented from the programme outside of No.10, he spoke to Political Correspondent Henry Zeffman about what people can expect to see today.Henry shared that later on, Sir Keir Starmer will emerge from Downing Street to give a speech before going to Buckingham Palace to see the King and formally resign, as Andy Burnham will then arrive.Usually, BBC Breakfast ends at 9:30; however, in light of the day's events, Jon confirmed there was going to be a slight change to the regular scheduling.‌He added: "Breakfast on for a little bit longer today until 10 o'clock this morning, and at that point we will all find out what's going to happen. Clive Myrie will be here live from Downing Street for a BBC News special."Watch around the world here on BBC News and in the UK on BBC One and iPlayer. That's all to come, they will guide us through those appointments and changes, a moment of history here in Downing Street."‌Although the presenter handed back to Sally Nugent in the studio to detail other headlines happening in the news, the programme went back to Jon later on in the show to speak with Emma Burnell and George Parker. However, as the guests started sharing their thoughts on the events unfolding, a man behind them started to clean the markings on the floor with a wooden broom.‌Acknowledging the odd interruption, Jon commented: "Guys, thank you very much indeed. I think we're going to have to stop you, otherwise we're going to get brushed away!"They've polished the front door already, buffed it up, and now they're getting rid of all the stains on the floor because the eyes of the world are going to be on Downing Street in the hours to come."In the studio, Sally replied: "He's behind you! Jon, thanks very much indeed. We'll talk to you again very soon. I wonder if sometimes people in Downing Street have placed a bet with someone or have phoned home and said, 'I'm about to be on the television, who knows!"‌Although that wasn't the only time the road was being cleaned behind Jon, as elsewhere a machine began to wash the markings off the floor when the BBC star was speaking to Henry.Jon joked: "Do you think we could get our shoes cleaned at the same time?" It wasn't long before people watching commented on the odd interruption as one person on X said: "Street cleaner going OTT there me thinks…. #bbcbreakfast "Article continues belowSomeone else wrote: "Not Larry, nooooooo!! The street cleaner just woke him up poor thing…" While another questioned: "Extended just to see what's happening when the speech isn't to 11 o'clock."BBC Breakfast is available to watch on BBC One weekdays from 6am
