A pastor was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.

A pastor heading to a baptism in St Lucia was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence during a road safety operation.

The arrest took place on the R618 near St Lucia in northern KwaZulu-Natal, where officers from the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) were conducting routine law enforcement operations.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma said the pastor was travelling to St Lucia for a cleansing and baptism ceremony and was being followed by members of his congregation when he was stopped by RTI officers.

According to Duma, officers became suspicious after detecting a strong smell of alcohol coming from the vehicle.
